She's All Fat Goes to Camp

She’s All Fat Goes To Camp

I love the She’s All Fat Podcast. But this episode, SAF Goes To Camp, is a keeper among keepers. It’s about the experience of going to fat camp as a young child or teenager.

Shrill on Hulu

Shrill on Hulu is an excellent series I think people will enjoy watching. It’s hilarious and heart rending and absolutely  perfect for spring. The first few minutes had me laughing and nodding my head. 15 minutes later and my heart was breaking for Annie (Aidy Bryant). Read more

When I Look in the Mirror

When I Look in the Mirror

When I look in the mirror, I see my mother’s face. I knew this would happen. I share a remarkable amount of physical characteristics with her. My hands look so much like hers, I used to joke that when I looked at them, I felt the urge to smack myself for my generally disrespectful tone of voice. I have a mole near my left shoulder that is exactly the same as the one my mom had. And, despite the fact I am taller and paler than she ever was, I look exactly like her. EXACTLY. Read more

Health at Every Size Reading Challenge

Health at Every Size

Health at Every Size is not a diet book, it’s a book about how to alter your mindset regarding food and exercise. It is very similar to a book we read a month or so ago, Intuitive Eating. Both are excellent conversations about two important topics. One, diets don’t work. Two, getting to know your body’s signals is much more important than calorie counting or any other weight loss tactic. Read more

Shes All Fat Listen Up

Shes All Fat

Everything about this podcast is delightful, from the opening theme song to the fact that they refer to all of their listeners as “Hannah.” Here is a podcast that wants to learn as much as it wants to teach. April K. Quioh & Sophie Carter-Kahn, the hosts of Shes All Fat podcast, never assume ultimate knowledge on any topic. Also, these two are great friends and that is apparent in their interactions with each other. Read more

The phantom five

The Phantom 5

The Phantom Five Defined: I have spent almost my entire life either planning to lose 5 lbs, in the process of losing 5 pounds or wishing I could lose 5 lbs, even when I had just lost 5 lbs. I would look in the mirror and think, “Hmmm, I look pretty good after losing 5 lbs, but you know what would make me look even better? Losing another 5 lbs.” This is not an exaggeration. This is my true experience, every day of my life, since I was about 8 years old. Read more

Intuitive Eating

Intuitive Eating

My therapist gave me Intuitive Eating when I was talking to her about my challenges around parenting and food.  I’ve read a lot of books about healthy eating in my day, but this book is completely different. This book is not about how you should modify your food intake to change your weight or your health, it’s about your relationship with food.  Our culture has inserted itself between humans and their food and it’s mostly been done for profit.

“Legalizing food is the critical step in changing your relationship with food. It frees you to respond to inner eating signals that have been smothered by negative thoughts and guilt feelings about eating.”

Discovery Of Witches

Lindy West

For those of you not familiar with Lindy West, she is a very, very funny comedian and an excellent writer. What’s even more impressive, is that she has taken those skills and uses them as tools for political activism. Lindy isn’t afraid to speak up on notoriously difficult subjects like abortion, rape jokes and fat shaming. Well, maybe she is afraid, but she does it anyway and we’ve all agreed that means she’s brave.
